A Study on relationship between Self-Concept and Somatic Symptoms in Adolescence

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between Self-Concept and Somatic Symtoms of Adolescents.
The subject for this study were 290 Adolescents between 13 22 years of age living in Kand S city in Kang Won Do.
Data were collected from March 22. to April 27., 1990 by means of a questionnaire.
The instruments used for this study were self-concept scale developed by Rosenberg (1971) and Choi Chung Hun (1972), and Somatic Symptoms scale developed by Wittenbern(1979).
Analysis of Data was done by frequency, percentages, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficient.
Conclusions obtained were as follows:
1. Most subjects had positive self-concepts. The mean level was 107.831 ¡¾ 15.842 in possible of score 30 to 150.
2. Most subjects had light Somatic Symptoms. The mean level was 95.039 ¡¾ 16.809, in possible of score 69 to 207.
3. General characteristic variables significantly related to the level of Somatic Symptoms were Age, Sex, the level of education and order of birth (F= 22.803 P= .000, t= 182.668 P= .000, F= 4.914 P= .008, F= 5.082 P= .007).
4. There was a significantly significent negative relationship between self-concept and the degree of self reported Somatic Symptoms (r= -.1581 P= .003).
Therefore the nurses are kindly asked to help adolescents to have a more positive selfconcept and to find the way for adolescents not to express self-reported Somatic Symptoms against such stresses but to overcome efficiently in adolescence.
The findings of this study have implication for assessment of adolescents in adolescence.
